Mansarovar comes from two Sanskrit words “Manas” (mind) and “Sarovar” (lake) translating to the lake of the mind. As per Hindu myth, the lake was first imagined by Lord Brahma and then physically created on Earth. Hence, it symbolizes purity, creation, and divine will. It is believed by devotees that taking a dip or drinking the water of the lake cleanses all sins and provides spiritual freedom. In the Hindu religion, Lake Mansarovar is known as the sacred location where they believe that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati live close by Mount Kailash. This is why many pilgrims complete their spiritual journey by combining the Kailash Parikrama pilgrimage with a visit to Mansarovar. Mansarovar Lake is linked with the name of Queen Maya who is the mother of Lord Buddha in Buddhism.

It is believed that after bathing in its holy waters, she conceived Lord Buddha. Tibetan Buddhists consider it as the actual version of Anavatapta Lake which is said to give out healing waters. Jains associate the lake with the meditation site of their first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhdev. For followers of Bon religion, the lake marks one of four sacred locations bordering Mount Kailash and is thought to bestow peace and longevity when rituals are performed there. Mansarovar is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, covering 320 square kilometers. Its almost circular shape, crystal clear waters, and the reflection of surrounding mountains are referred to as “the lake of divine vision." In contrast to the purity of Mansarovar, not far away lies Rakshastal, a saltwater lake shrouded in dark legends and demonic energies. The striking contrast between the two lakes symbolises the eternal balance between good and evil; one lake is fresh and round while the other is salty and crescent shaped.

The lake receives glacial feed and remains frozen during harsh Tibetan winters. In the summer, however, it transforms into a stunning turquoise blue. Swans glide across the water with Mount Kailash in the background. Sunrise and sunset at the lake are covered in magical orange, pink, and gold clouds and shimmering water. The Mansarovar Yatra is undertaken by people from India, Nepal, Bhutan, and all over the world, and it involves the holy dip as well as the Kailash Kora (circumambulation). The trek’s physical intensity is coupled with high altitude and rough terrain, yet many claim that the journey offers unparalleled spiritual benefits. Devotees immerse themselves in the freezing water of the lake with steadfast faith, determined to purify their sins and receive divine blessings. The experience for many is both deeply emotional and transformative in nature. While others chant mantras, other devotees light butter lamps by the shore, all of which enhances the experience.

Incredible as it sounds, some pilgrims choose to walk and barefoot circle the lake, completing a monumental 88 kilometer journey. This area is filled with powerful sounds, such as prayers being chanted, prayer wheels spinning, and other forms of devotional calmness which only adds to the experience. In the past, it was hard to go to Mansarovar as it was very remote. But now, both air and road travel have made the place much easier to reach. Pilgrims from India and Nepal commonly use Lhasa, Simikot in Nepal, or the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand. There are also guided tours and helicopter services available. Though guided tours and helicopter services make getting there easier, the sacred feeling of Mansarovar remains the same. Visitors are reminded to obey local traditions, safeguard nature, and protect the holy nature of the lake.

A trip to Lake Mansarovar is more treasurable as a pilgrim would not just see a far off lake at a lofty elevation, but they would also embark on a journey within themselves. Pilgrims often engage in contemplation during the trip due to the tranquility of the water, crisp icy air, and proximity to the mountain which makes them feel almost divine. Mansarovar impacts people deeply owing to its nature, spirit, and ease, so whether you believe in religion or not, you are bound to appreciate your heart being reminded of beautiful simple things.
